Harvard Medical School dean Joseph Martin hosted a
reception on June 12, 2000 to celebrate the establishment of the Victor
J. Aresty professorship in medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical
Center. The chair, named in memory of the former executive of several
Boston shoe firms, is funded through donations made by his widow Pola
Aresty (right) and their sons Jeffrey and Neil. At the reception were
his brothers Julian Aroesty (left), a cardiologist at Beth Israel
Deaconess, and Joseph Aresty (center).
Dr. Vikas Sukhatme currently holds the Professorship. Sukhatme is chief of the Renal Division and
member of the Hematology-Oncology Division in the Department of Medicine
at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. His research interests include
the discovery of a family of mammalian "early response" transcription
factors induced by extracellular growth and differentiation signals;
kidney-specific gene regulation and organogenesis; kidney cancer; in
vivo kidney gene therapy, and, more recently, antiangiogenic therapies
for cancer. His work spans basic science and translational studies.
